The 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010 has resulted in an estimated 112,000 deaths and almost 200,000 injured victims. Despite the damage in Haiti’s infrastructure near the capital,
Port-au-Prince
, the American Red Cross - in conjunction with the Haitian Red Cross, International Committee of the Red Cross, and other national Red Cross societies - has sent 100 tons of needed supplies to those affected by the earthquake. With donations totaling over $112 million from individual and corporate donations, text messages, CNN’s telethon and “Hope for Haiti Now” global telethon, the Red Cross has been able to secure the necessary supplies (such as food, clean drinking water, hygiene kits, and medical necessities) and provide shelter to the Haitians for immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery. To date the American Red Cross has spent or committed more than $67 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors. Red Cross relief supplies continue to arrive, and although bottlenecks remain the situation has significantly improved. Increased aid is reaching the survivors in the capital city and outlying areas. The distribution of supplies has been possible due to the collective effort among the military, the Red Cross and other relief organizations.
