4.4 Earthquake Jolts Southland Awake Tuesday, March 16, 2010 (168 reads)
Local residents were jolted awake early this morning as 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 4:04am on Tuesday, March 16th. Centered in Pico Rivera, the quake was felt as far away as Yucaipa, Santa Clarita, and
Orange
County . There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
During an earthquake the American Red Cross recommends that you DUCK under a sturdy table or desk, COVER your head and neck, and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. Once the shaking has stopped, then it is ok to check for injuries or damages. While there is only a 5% likelihood of another, stronger earthquake smaller aftershocks are likely. Arcadia Chapter CEO Bob Deao Retires Monday, March 01, 2010 (0 reads)
After 35 years with the American Red Cross, Bob Deao, Arcadia Chapter Executive Director, has announced his retirement, effective March 1, 2010. Mr. Deao has been with the Arcadia Chapter since October of 2001, coming on board just after the devastating events of September 11th.
Prior to coming to Arcadia Mr. Deao was the Executive Director of the Claremont Chapter and Manager of the Coachella Valley Chapter before that. Additionally, Mr. Deao has traveled across the in response to large scale natural disasters, serving as the Red Cross Liaison to local and state government officials during emergencies such as the Loma Prieta and Northridge Earthquakes; flooding in Mississippi and tornados in
Oklahoma ; and Hurricanes Hugo, Katrina, and Ike, and many other natural disasters. A member of local Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, Mr. Deao has presented Red Cross information to countless community, civic, and charity groups. In his tenure at the Arcadia Chapter, Mr. Deao has expanded scope of Health & Safety Programs to encompass the
San Gabriel
Valley . Mr. Deao has worked hard to promote the programs and services of the American Red Cross in the community. He is a valuable asset to the community and will be greatly missed. Please join us in wishing him much happiness in his retirement.

8.8 Magnitude Earthquake hits Chile Monday, March 01, 2010 (170 reads)
The American Red Cross is responding to the strong 8.8 magnitude earthquake in , making an initial $50,000 pledge from its International Response Fund for relief operations.
“Our hearts go out to the people of as they cope with the immediate aftermath of this earthquake and the continuing aftershocks,” says David Meltzer, senior vice president of international services with the American Red Cross. “Thanks to the generosity of the American people who previously donated to our International Relief Fund, we’ve been able to release an initial pledge to help the Chilean people in their hour of need and we stand ready to provide additional assistance.”
In addition, the American Red Cross will continue to monitor the potential impacts of Saturday’s tsunami and is prepared to help the people of Hawaii and the territories in the Pacific, if there is a need. As of Saturday night, all tsunami warnings resulting from the devastating earthquake in have been cancelled.
A regional member of the Red Cross global network is now in assessing the situation and a small team of other Red Cross emergency workers, including one member from the American Red Cross, are enroute to
Santiago.
