As ghosts, pirates, and princesses prepare  to descend on neighborhoods across America on Halloween night, the American Red Cross has a few safety tips  to help you prepare for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday.  By following a few simple safety tips, families can make this Halloween a safe and fun time for trick-or-treaters. October 5-1, 2008 is Fire Prevention Week.  You can prevent home fires.  The American Red Cross responded to more than 74,000 disasters in communities across the Unied Sates last year and 93% of these were fire related.  However, only 26% of families have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.  In 2006 a home fire was reported every 80 seconds.  You can take steps to prevent fires in your own home.  Make sure your home has indoor sprinklers or smoke alarms.  Test your smoke alarms one a month.  Make a family fire escape plan and practice it on a regular basis.  These simple steps can help you be fire safe at home.
