First, designate an out-of-town or out-of-state contact so family members can call the same person and leave a message about their status. During an emergency, local calls will be more difficult to connect than long-distance calls.
Next, plan how to exit your home and regroup in an emergency. Are there two exits to every room in case the first way is blocked? Establish a family meeting place outside, such as the tree in the front yard or the neighbor’s house. Make special preparations for small children, the elderly, or those with special needs who may not be able to get out on their own.
Establish a second meeting location if you are forced to regroup away from your home or are not allowed into your neighborhood during an emergency.
Finally, practice your family emergency plan twice a year.
Don’t just talk about being prepared; make a plan and commit to it! Designate an out-of-area contact. Plan how to evacuate your house in an emergency. Pick two places to regroup – one outside your home and one local meeting place. Then practice, practice, practice until each family member knows what to do and where to go. With three easy steps you can Be Red Cross Ready: Build a kit. Make a plan. Be prepared.
